I am indebted to Mr. John Lambert for much of the detail I have been able to include on this site about Charleston and the Birley's. John was officially the Chauffeur to Sir Oswald and Lady Birley but he also undertook the duties as Head Gardener of the Ornamental Gardens.
John does not like the camera too much and I sadly have only one photograph with him in it and I had to use an excuse to get that one. I shall include more of his reminiscences at the bottom of this page but we must not forget the other members of the staff...
